As the first exhibition in the programme slightly slipping on a banana skin (ssoabs), be part of is devised as a preamble, a set up, and a way of having a say.

This initial project, taking place in the premises of the Media Library at the FMAC (Fund for Contemporary Art of the City of Geneva), with the mandate of the city in order to highlight its audiovisual heritage, pinpoints its area of intervention and takes up its position within its environment.

The Media Library at the FMAC, which opened in 2009 following the closure of the Centre for Contemporary Image (CIC) is a multipurpose venue which encompasses the function of an exhibition area, and a place for consulting and conserving several video collections (that of the FMAC, strictly speaking, to which are added the Fonds André Iten, coming from the CIC and the Fonds Christophe Chazalon, dedicated to Chris Marker). The FMAC also represents a major financial support for the Geneva art scene, as much for the production as for the acquisition of works.

The exhibition be part of takes this complex situation as its starting point, and embarks on a line of thinking about the notions of art scene and belonging, as well as links between artist and institution, artist and public, and artist and art market. Without claiming to exhaust these issues, which have been widely dealt with by criticism and theory, be part of presents different positions of artists who question both their own praxis and the context in which they work.

In an often ironical way, they dissect their relations to art and the institution, and highlight the interplays of power, strategy and seduction at work in art circles. By deconstructing the discourse, they sometimes create a fiction which is peculiar to them, like an affirmation of their position. These works are not, however, merely self-reflective, but they evoke more broadly the question of belonging to a group, the success that people may want, and the possibility of being understood by others, or not.

As the zero point of the program, which will subsequently be mainly oriented towards the outside by exploring historical, socio-political, and environmental issues, this first show is a way of gaining a foothold in a context, and underscoring the ambivalence of the relations between art praxis, varying kinds of public, and places of dissemination.

Being part of, or not – one thinks of the art scene, and the institution, but also of the collection. Having one’s work in a collection, which is a fortiori public, is a powerful marker of recognition and (together with other players) the institution plays the role of referee in an artistic career.

In order to twist these processes, be part of is also a chance to develop an extremely open project, which consists in a temporary collection of moving images. As a distant reminder of the way the CIC’s Media Library worked, where works were often left on loan for consultation, THE SSOABS COLLECTION will play host, throughout the program, to the works of all those people, artists or otherwise, who wish to take part in the project, and undertakes to make them accessible to the public, through consultation at the Media Library, and then during public presentations.

This organically evolving project finds its full meaning in the participation of artists and authors, whom it is entirely dependent upon—a way of delegating the prerogatives of choice and perhaps of switching authority roles.
